How do I size my AWS cluster?

A DCOS cluster consumes AWS resources based on the number of masters and slaves that are configured. Use this information to determine what size of cluster to launch based on your current AWS resource limits:

Resource1 Master, 5 Slaves, 1 Public Slave3 Masters, 5 Slaves, 1 Public Slave
VPCs 1 1
Cloudformation stacks 1 1
Elastic load balancers 2 2
Auto scaling groups 3 3
EC2 instances 7 m3.xlarge + 1 m3.medium for NAT = 8 9 m3.xlarge + 1 m3.medium for NAT = 10

Here are the AWS Limits for a standard user account. These are the default limits for AWS users that have not requested quota increases:

  • Running On-Demand m3.xlarge instances: 20
  • EC2-VPC Elastic IPs: 5
  • VPCs: 5
  • Auto Scaling Groups: 20
  • Launch configurations: 100
  • Elastic load balancer: 20
